Here we share some of the accomplishments of our current CCS
math students and alumni.
2022-2023
- Benjamin Faktor has started a research internship at
Toyon.
- Gahl Shemy, Michael Kuhn, and Benjamin Faktor have
submitted a paper to the journal Complex Analysis and
Operator Theory.
- Runze Li and Merrick Hua will present a talk at JMM this
year.
- Chloe Avery finished her PhD at University of Chicago and
now works as adjunct faculty at University of Portland.
- Naomi Burkhart works as Software Engineer at Modern
Health.
- Milo Moses has submitted the manuscript: "Pontryagin Duality for Modules over Compact Discrete Valuation Rings" to the Journal of Algebra.
- Milo Moses will be presenting a poster at RACA-CON 2022
about his research.
- Milo Moses gave a talk on Finite Fields at the Berkeley
Math Circle supported by NSF.
- Gil Tabak works as software engineer at Google after
completing a PhD in Applied Physics at Stanford University.
- Nicholas Sherer works as Senior Algorithm Engineer II at
Tandem Diabetes Care. He has a PhD in biophysics from the
University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
- Megan Maguire completed a PhD at University of
Wisconsin-Madison. Then, completed a postdoc at University
of California Irvine.
- Brandon Kerr works as a math teacher in Virginia.
- David Cattan is working as a software engineer.
- Jacqueline Bush works at National Security Agency.
- Nicole Carroll works as Operations Systems Engineer at
NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory.
- Ethan Epperly is a PhD student on Applied and
Computational Mathematics at Caltech.
- Daria Mileeva has started a graduate program at University
of Chicago in the area of Financial Math.
- Emily Lopez has started a PhD on Applied Math at Cornell
University and received an NSF GRFP fellowship.
- Yash Chitgopekar works as a researcher at Quantum ML.
- Emma Lennen has started a PhD at University of
Pennsylvania.
- Ben Faktor and Runze Li have submitted the paper "Linear
Preservers of the Lorentz Spectrum of 3x3 matrices" for
publication.
- Alumn Mark Rychnovsky is now an assistant
professor at University of Southern California after
finishing a PhD at Columbia University.
2019-2020
- Geneva Schlafly will start a PhD in Medical Physics at the
University of Chicago this fall.
- Emily Lopez is now a McNair's scholar. Also she has
received an offer to do research at SMALL REU next summer.
- Alumn Anthony Aylward is a PhD student at UC San Diego in
the Bioinformatics and Systems Biology department.
- Alumn Adam Varney is a math teacher at Harvard-Westlak
school.
- Alumn Per Von Soosten is a postdoc at Harvard University
after completing a PhD at Technische Universitat Munchen in
Germany.
- Alex Xu has been accepted into the PhD programs at UC Berkeley, Columbia, and Notre Dame.
- The Hertz Fellowships, an annual competition for Graduate Fellowships, are extremely prestigious and extremely competitive. Our student Ethan Epperly (CCS CS/Math) is the only Santa Barbara finalist among a pretty impressive list of peers.
- Daria Mileeva has submitted her first paper for publication.
- Geneva Schlafly and Rebecca Embar have given a talk at the
Joint Mathematical Meetings presenting the research they did
over the summer.
- Rebecca Embar gave a talk at the Young Mathematicians
conference.
- Yash Chitgopekar will spend the summer working at Los Alamos National Lab working on Physics-based active machine learning approach to decision making in Material Science with a primary focus on Deep learning, Active learning, Image analysis, Analysis tools, and sufficient Material Science.
- Yunkai Zhang presented a poster titled "Exploration of Numerical Precision in Deep Neural Networks" at SIAM-CSE19
- Yunkai Zhang coauthored a paper "Xiaoyong Jin, Shiyang Li, Yunkai Zhang and Xifeng Yan. Multi-step Deep Autoregressive Forecasting with Latent States", which was accepted to the Time Series Workshop for the 2019 ICML conference.
- Yunkai Zhang will join the Spatial and People Analytics team at WeWork as a summer intern for 2019.
- Rebecca Embar got accepted to the UCSB REU program.
- Daria Mileeva and Daniel Guo got a SURF scholarship to do
research over the summer.
- Sarafina Ford will start a PhD at University of Washington
next academic year.
- Milo Betchloff will start a PhD at UC Davis next academic
course.
- Hedi Xia will start a PhD at UCLA next academic course.
- Kalvin Goode will attend a Master's degree on Machine
Learning and Data Science at UC San Diego.
- Jeffrey Luo will start a PhD at UCLA next academic course.
- Geneva Schlafly will be participating at the Boise
University REU program next summer.
- Emily Lopez has been admitted to the Eureka program and
will be supported to do research as an intern.
- Kalvin Goode has been accepted to a Master's program in
Statistics at UC Irvine and to a Master's degree in Machine
Learning and Data Science at UC San Diego.
- Emma Lennen will be participating in an REU program at
University of Chicago.
- Alex Xu got accepted into the Princeton summer school in
geometric analysis.
- Our Putnam team has ranked 28 out of 568 institutions. Go
team!
- Kayleigh Adams was accepted into a math PhD program at UC
Santa Cruz.
- Emily Lopez was accepted into the Directed Reading
Program. She will be doing research with a graduate
student.
- Emma Lennen will be giving a talk at the Join Mathematical
Meetings in Baltimore, to talk about her research. He trip
as funded by a College of Creative TURF grant.
- Hedi Xia has been admitted to the Applied Math PhD program
at UC Davis, Cornell, UCLA and Washington University.
- Geneva Schlafly spent a semester studying abroad in
Singapoure. She also participated in a summer program at
Budapest, Hungary.
- Geneva Schlafly has been nominated for the Goldwater
Scholarship.
- Ted Tinker will start a Masters degree on Data Science at
Syracuse University in January, 2019.
- Emma Lennen has received funding to participate in the
GROW conference.
2017-2018
- Kalvin Goode will be participating in a summer internship
at NASA this summer collecting and analyzing data for the
Drone project.
- Adam Reevesman will start a Master of Science in Data
Science at the University of San Francisco this summer.
- Ted Tinker has accepted a position at the National Geo-spatial Intelligence Agency. He was also accepted for the American University Kogod's School of Business's Analytics Program.
- Ted Tinker won 2nd place in the Most Excelling Writing/Prose award from the CCS Literature department! That makes two years in a row that he has placed. As far as he knows, he is the only mathematician to even enter.
- Nick Geis, Megan Franke, Emma Lennen and Rebecca Embark
participated in the PMA-PUMP-Research Symposium. Megan
presented the talk: "Convex Binary Codes", Nick presented
the talk: "Perfect s-bases of size m for finite abelian
groups", Emma presented the talk: "Elimination circle", and
Rebecca presented the talk: "The tower of Hanoi".
- Phoebe Coy has been awarded the SMART scholarship for
graduate school granted by the Department of Defense.
- Kayla Wright will start a PhD in math at the University of
Minnesota.
- Xander Song got his paper "Explicit Block-Structures for
Block-Symmetric Fiedler-like pencils" accepted for
publication in Electronic Journal of Linear Algebra.
- Megan Franke got her paper "Every binary code can be realized by convex sets" accepted for publication in the journal Advances in Applied Mathematics.
- Chloe Avery has received an NSF Graduate Research
Fellowship.
- Geneva Schlafly will be participating in the Budapest
Semesters in Mathematics program next summer
- Alex Xu has been accepted to the REU at Brown University.
- Talon Stark has been accepted into the math PhD program at
UCLA.
- The AWM student chapter held a special event for female high school students in the area, called POWERS day, on March, 3rd.
- We have started a new CCS math tradition: we will have a
board games night after each All CCS dinner. We had our
first board games night in the Winter quarter.
- Matt Uffenheimer was admitted to the Berkeley REU.
- Yash Chitgopekar has received a Gorman Scholarship.
- Colin Ni was accepted to the University of Chicago REU
program.
- Megan Franke has been admitted to a PhD program at UC San
Diego, USC, and UC Irvine.
- Our Putnam team formed by Ethan Epperly, Ben Spitz and
Alex Xu, ranked 37 among the 575 institutions that
participated in the Putnam competition this year.
- Tamara Gomez presented the talk: "Knotty Outcomes in
Billiard Boards of Hexagonal Tiles" at the 11th Symposium
for Women in Math Southern California and at the Joint
Mathematics Meetings in San Diego.
- Kayleigh Adams was accepted to the Berkeley REU.
- Yunkai Zhang gave a talk at the Joint Meetings titled " Exploration of Numerical Precision in Deep Neural Networks".
- Benjamin Spitz has been admitted to the math PhD program
at UCLA, the math PhD program at University of Washington,
and the math PhD program at Utah University.
- Nicholas Geis has been admitted to the math PhD program at Ohio State University and the math PhD program at Arizona State University.
- Chloe Avery has been admitted to the Math PhD program offered by University of Chicago, Cornell, Illinois Urbana-Champaign, UT Austin, Notre Dame, CU Boulder, University of Washington and Duke.
- Megan Franke has submitted for publication the paper "Every binary code can be realized by convex sets".
- Xander Song has submitted for publication the paper "Explicit block-structures for block-symmetric Fiedler-like pencils".
- Phoebe Coy presented the talk "Study of Vortex Dynamics With Free Surface" in JMM 2018. She also presented a poster at the same conference.
- Phoebe Coy was admitted
to the Master of Mathematical Sciences program with a focus
in Computational Sciences at Ohio State University. She also
got admitted to a Master program at San Diego State
University and UC Merced.
