News 2016-2017
Here we share some of the accomplishments of our CCS math students.
2016-2017
- Mi Yu, Hedi Xia, and Xiaoyu Qiao have obtained an
honorable mention in the Mathematical Contest in Modeling,
2017.
- Chloe Avery has been awarded a CCS TURF award to travel
and participate in MathFest.
- Eric Rice will be start an M.A. in Applied Math at UC San
Diego next year.
- Landon Settle got accepted to an M.S. in math at Claremont
University and a PhD program at Carnegie-Mellon.
- Kayla Wright will start the Master program in math that we
offer for CCS students in the Fall 2017.
- Andrew Ballin will start a PhD on Physics at UC Davis in
Fall 2017.
- Zihan Yi has been admitted to Columbia Statistics MA,
University of Southern California Computer Science MA,
University of Southern California Applied Mathematics MA,
and Northwestern Engineering Science and Applied Math MS.
- Jerry Luo will start the Master program in math that we
offer for CCS students in the Fall 2017.
- Our AWM (Association of Women in Math) student chapter is organizing the POWERS Math Day 2017, a full day of activities for female high-school students in the Ventura-Santa Barbara-Santa Maria area. The activities will include a panel with UCSB undergraduate and graduate students in different STEM areas, a talk by a female mathematician, fun seminars led by female scientists, a problem solving competition, lunch at the lagoon, and more.
- Shengyang Zhang will be doing an internship at GE Global
Research next summer as a data scientist intern.
- Robin Allison has been admitted to a PhD program in math
at the University of Oregon.
- Ben Spitz ranked 248th out of 4164 participants in the
Putnam competition this year.
- Our Putnam team ranked 42nd out of 568 institutions this
year.
- Lihui Mao has been admitted to the UCLA and the USC
Master's programs in Data Science.
- Duncan Prince will be attending the REU at UCONN (Research
Experience in Cyber and Civil Infrastructure Security) next
summer.
- Hedi Xia has been accepted to the PROMYS program.
- Phoebe Coy was accepted to the REU at San Diego State
University.
- Zhixing Guo was accepted into the PhD math program at
UCSB.
- Alexander Song was accepted into the UCLA Applied Math
REU.
- Yunkai Zhang was accepted into two REU programs. He will
be attending the RIPS program at UCLA.
- Tamara Gomez will be attending the REU at UW Bothell next
summer.
- Chloe Avery got accepted to the following REU programs:
SMALL, Emory and Berkeley.
- Megan Franke has been accepted to the Texas A & M REU.
- The UCSB AWM student chapter sponsored the talk by Prof.
Katy Craig titled "The math of swarming robots, college
admissions, and slime mold ".
- Tamara Gomez and Phoebe Coy gave a talk titled "A
combinatorial model of skew-symmetric quantum matrices" in
the Southern California Women in Mathematics Symposium.
- Andrew Ballin has been accepted to a Physics PhD program
in Rutgers, UC Davis, and Stony Brook University.
- Eric Rice has be accepted to the M.S. on Applied
Mathematics at University of Washington, at UC Santa
Barbara, UC Irvine, UC Davis, and UC San Diego. He will be
committing to UCSD for the Fall quarter of 2017.
- The UCSB AWM student chapter offered a talk about
"Impostor Syndrome" aimed to help students in math who,
despite being high achievers, cannot internalize their
accomplishments and have a persistent fear of being exposed
as a "fraud".
- Chloe Avery, Tamara Gomez, Zhixing Guo and Phoebe Coy have
started an AWM student chapter at UCSB. AWM stands for
Association of Women in Mathematics.
- In the Life After CCS series, we had a panel with faculty
about "how to apply to graduate school".
- Phoebe Coy was awarded a Small Research Grant for Fall 2016.
- Shengyang Zhang has started a Master's program on Data
Science at Columbia University.
